I hope that these two articles have whetted your appetite for the plants that have been described. One of the annoying things about reading articles of this type, is that you can never get hold of the plants that you read about. Fear not....I have come up with a list of nurseries on both sides of the Atlantic that will, hopefully, be able to supply some, if not all, of the plants mentioned in the text. How about that for service. And all for free....the service that is....not the plants.
I am indebted to Jack Ferreri of NARGS for his help on the N.American suppliers, to Herman van Beusekom for reminding me that there are some excellent nurseries in Europe and indeed to the nurseries themselves for having the good sense to supply plants to fit in with my articles.

If you know of any other nurseries selling the plants mentioned and they are not on the list, then please e-mail me so I can update the listing.

SPECIAL NOTE
I will only list nurseries that have been personally recommended by my visitors or those from which I personally, have received good service and good quality plants on a regular basis. This is NOT a free advertising space for the trade, neither is it in any way sponsored by the trade. The nurseries mentioned are there on merit alone.

Exclusion, in no way implies inferiority of product or service, it simply means that, either I have not used the nursery, or I have as yet not had the nursery recommended to me or the nursery does not sell the plants mentioned in the articles.

This is NOT a comprehensive list of alpine nurseries and should not be read as such.

"Many very unusual plants, some of them not hardy in the northern tier of the Midwest (where I am), but I suspect they'd all be hardy for you". (NB These are Jack's comments to me......I am not qualified to comment on what would be hardy in the USA...... AG).
Some samplings ... 15 different magnolias, many callicarpas and camellias, perhaps 30 rhodos (species and cultivar), seventeen viburnum.

I am sure there are many other nurseries out there selling top quality plants that may be suitable for the peat garden. Many of them can be found in the advertisements in the back of the specialist society bulletins but unfortunately I can't list them all, neither do I have first hand experience of their goods, so I can't personally recommend them. The nurseries should be supported...they are the lifeblood of our hobby but spare a thought too for the unsung heroes out there.

Let us not forget the one-man nursery, the lone propagator who takes his plants to the local shows and car boot (garage) sales. He is the one like you and I who cares for his plants and cherishes them. He does us all a favour by distributing his "spares". Support the trade but support "the little man" as well.
