TEXT: Alstroemeria hookeri LILIACEAE ( ALSTROEMERIACEAE) We have grown this species here for 10 years and it never fails to delight us every year. Our plants grow to 4" and flowers only after the leaves wither completely. The species is I understand Peruvian. We have found that it grows best in our alpine troughs or in raised beds. In both structures we use a growing media based on composted pine bark (Pinus radiata), the use of peat here is not common and is becoming less so, in my case this is a philosophical and environmental position, also bark media are much more reliable. Propagation is either from seed, which when fresh germinates well in a high airfilled porosity media, or from division which is less reliable.
