THE
PHILOSOPHY OF AWARDS The
idea of giving awards to other web sites, always struck me as being a little
pompous on the part of the donors. After all, these were not large
organisations or institutions who had earned the right to present awards to
lesser mortals....these were 'ordinary' web site owners who had decided to
bestow 'plaudits' upon each other. Were these 'Mutual Appreciation Awards'
really worth having?
I thought 'not'
until the day I received one and realised that someone, somewhere
appreciated all the hard work that I had put into my site......and the fact
that I wanted to give something of myself to others with similar interests.
At the end of the day, isn't this what all sites should strive to do. Is not
the purpose of a site, especially a non-commercial site, to entertain, to
instruct, to enlighten ?
Where would
we be, as explorers of knowledge, if the knowledge hadn't been put there for
us to enjoy in the first instance? And so, recognising that an award only
serves to stimulate the recipient to impart more of their knowledge, talent,
skill etc., I am now fully convinced that far from being a worthless graphic
file, an award is something to treasure and to use as a springboard to
better things.
With these
considerations in mind, I am now pleased to be able to offer the ALPINE
GARDEN-GOLDEN LINKS AWARD,
to those sites that, in my opinion, give from their souls and take nothing
in return. Sites that are worth linking to. Sites that deserve to be
recognised for their content and for the skill in designing them. And above
all for those web masters and mistresses who take time out to help those
less-talented than theselves, to understand the intricacies of web
technology and design.
THIS AWARD
CANNOT BE APPLIED FOR. IT WILL BE AWARDED TO THOSE SPECIAL SITES THAT, IN MY
OPINION, ARE DESERVING OF A "GOLDEN LINK."
The
ALPINE GARDEN-SILVER LINKS AWARD
can be applied for and I welcome applications from
those of you who meet the following requirements.
ELIGIBILITY
FOR THE AWARD To become eligible for
this award, the following conditions have to be met.
1.The
site must be the bona fide labour of the webmaster/webmistress. (Contributory
articles, artwork, photographs etc. are permitted)
2.The
site must be "Family Friendly"
3.The
site must support the principle of
Web
Prestige
4. The site
content must be of an artistic/scientific nature, encompassing art, music,
botany, gardening, photography, etc. and must encourage, teach
and stimulate in those disciplines.
5.
The site must be "live" i.e. it must be developed and reviewed
on a regular basis.
6.
The site must be free of any prejudice, be it race, creed, sex, colour,
ability or religion.
7. The site must
be pleasing to the eye...no epilepsy inducing backgrounds or inappropriate
advertising banners.
8. The site must
be easy to navigate....no broken links
