| TEXT: Boronia pilosa (Rutaceae) This species is
an occasional inhabitant of alpine and more commonly in sub-alpine regions.
The specimen here was photographed about 3 weeks ago on Mt Barrow in the
north of Tasmania, it was growing in sub-alpine bolster heath along with
Olearias, Pimelia and Ozothamnus spp. In this environment the plant rarely
exceeds 18" to 2' high and when in flower is a remarkable sight. Although
the name suggests a hairy leaved plant the reality is often different and
at least 2 varieties are named in which glabrous leaves are diagnostic.
Cultivation is generally easy given good drainage and poor soils. Propagation
is either by seed which is a bit difficult and cuttings of semi-ripe wood
which is easy. |
