TEXT: Stylidium graminifolium (STYLIDIACEAE) Trigger plant A common species of perennial, sometimes herbaceous plant found throughout Tasmania in practically all of our diverse habitats. On a recent trip to our west coast I saw the species growing in areas bordering climax rainforest where rainfall might top 2.5 metres pa. Likewise it grows on our east coast where rainfall might only be 40-40cm pa. Stylidium graminifolium is distributed throughout our alpine heaths particularly at lower levels. Culture of the species is generally easy, we have found that an ordinary well drained media or soil will suffice, it is best to avoid elevated phosphorus levels. Propagation is either by division which is relatively easy or from seed which is abundantly produced and has a high viability. The yellow plant to the front of Stylidium is Podolepis jaceoides.
